The Lovers by the Sea
Frank and Clarissa met after work at the Sea Lovers Diner every Wednesday of every week during their 10 year marriage. Both were die hard romantics. Clarissa enjoyed watching the sea from the diner; it sat at the end of the pier; it could be calm or angry or titillating. The weather had been warm today, the sky over the ocean had been clear enough to see the horizon, but dusk was near and the sky was painting a canvas (of various shades of orange) as the sun slowly sizzled into the sea.
Clarissa ran her fingers underneath her hair and sighed; feeling content that she had been able to get their favorite table by the window facing the sea. Billy Holiday’s I’ll be seeing you was playing on the old juke box and she’d just ordered her usual Rendezvous martini while she waited for Frank.
I don’t know how I’m going to tell Frank about next week. It will be the first time that we won’t be able to meet here at all. There have been some occasions that we have only managed to meet for cocktails instead of dinner; like holidays or other events that involved the children. I just can’t find a way to get out of this client meeting (in San Francisco) scheduled for Wednesday next week. I didn’t realize how important these nights were to me until now; we can’t even meet for cocktails. I felt so desperate earlier when trying to talk to my boss about moving it one day either way. He said his hands were tied and there was nothing he could do. After sitting with a pit in my stomach for an hour, I decided to call the client. This is something I wouldn’t do normally but I had to try. The client was sorry but, his schedule was so tight he wouldn’t be able to reschedule for a couple of months; that would cause us to lose a large contract. I just didn’t know what to do anymore. I would just have to tell Frank I couldn’t find a way. Then it hit me, I could bring Frank with me, if he could get the time off; we could at least dine somewhere together.
Frank caught a glimpse of Clarissa from the doorway. “My God she still looks so beautiful after all these years.” He whispered to himself. The guy in front of him whispered “Lucky you.” Frank just smiled and kept his eyes on her youthful beauty. Although she was going to be turning 45 next month, she still had her girlish figure and wore her brown hair long. Her tantalizing green eyes took attention away from the crow’s feet she had earned over the years. She didn’t like them, but Frank thought they made her sexier.
“For you sweetheart” he said as he handed her the traditional yellow rose and kissed her. “Fancy meeting you here” he teased.
“I’m sorry, who are you”? Clarissa quipped. I’m waiting for my husband, maybe you know him; he’s tall and lean with salt and pepper hair and eyes only for me“?
“Well, never leave a beautiful woman waiting or you might lose her I always say.” He said with a devilish grin. He always makes me giggle.
I took his hand in mine and explained my predicament. “But if you can come with me, we could find a seaside diner there. I know it won’t be the same exactly but I tried everything else.” She said speaking hurriedly.
“I’m so sorry Clarissa, but I’m having a client meeting next Tuesday. It’s going to run thru Wednesday late afternoon.” He said with disappointment. “I wouldn’t be able to catch a flight or train in time.” Disappointed, we didn’t feel like eating so I just finished my martini and we headed home.
We were both sitting at our laptops, trying to keep our spirits up while talking to our eldest child at college (Mine from my first marriage) via webcam. Suddenly I jumped up excited. “I know what we can do! Oh wait, let me look something up.” I said full of excitement. I put Sea Lovers Diner in the search engine and clicked on locations. BINGO. They had one off the pier in San Francisco. “Ok, we take our laptops with us to the same diners in different locations, sit them in each others place so that they are opened towards us and we can share dinner and cocktails via webcam” I said jumping around the living room, so excited that I tripped over the foot stool and fell flat on my back laughing.
“You’re a genius, Clarissa.” Frank said as he lay down on top of me.
I told the manager on duty what I was going to be doing so not everybody would think I was completely nuts. I got the laptop set up and turned it on. There he was, my Romeo. I ordered my Rendezvous Martini, and settled in for a special date. I was gazing into Frank’s eyes when suddenly a yellow rose was laid on my table. I looked up and there was the manager of the diner. “From Frank” he says. And the jukebox played Billy Holiday’s I’ll be seeing you.
